Qualifications/Education

Robert Buckley was born in the English county of Somerset on 26th September 1819. On 28th June 1837, at the age of 17 years, he left Gravesend, on the ship Katherine Stewart Forbes with 222 passengers on board, arriving at Port Adelaide on 17th October. The three masted ship built in 1818 and captained by Alfred Fell, measured 117'3" x 29'4" with 5'11" between decks and had been a convict ship in 1830 and 1832.

Robert was employed by the South Australian Company in a survey party which originally surveyed part of the Onkaparinga district. Robert probably spent the following 10 years waiting for the country land to be surveyed.

On 13th June 1847 he purchased Bankseer Farm near Charleston from Robert Bogle Fairley who had bought it from the Crown. In one reference it is named as "Banksia Farm." The farm was situated between Lobethal and Charleston at Schoenthal and comprised Sections 5085 and 5087 in the Hundred of Onkaparinga. Onkaparing was the second Council formed in the State.

On 30th May 1848 Robert married Rose Schmidt at Blakistan near Nairne. The marriage produced 10 children and as the family grew, rooms were added to their cottage.

Robert Buckley made a will on the 2nd January 1869.

Robert died on 12th Apr 1894 at the age of 74 years, a pioneer of over 56 years. Charles William Buckley continued to work the farm.

Pursuant to the will, his widow, Rose received the profits from the farm until her death in 1912. The will provided that on the death of his widow one or more of the sons be permitted to purchase the farm if he or they desired to do so.

Rose died on 14th May 1910 aged 82 years. On the death of his mother, Charles William Buckley purchased portion of the farm and the remainder near the Mount Torrens Road was sold to Friedrich Schubert who subsequently sold his portion to Hermann Juers.

In about 1928 Charles William Buckley transferred his farm to his son Frederick Charles Buckley. Charles William died on 24 Dec 1942. Frederick Charles Buckley farmed the land until 14 Oct 1959 when he in turn transferred the property to his son Jeffery Buckley, the great grandson of Robert Buckley.

The land was owned and worked by four generations of the Buckley family during the past 120 years.

Both Rose and Robert are interred in the Lobethal cemetery.
