Joan was the first woman to be accepted as a full time theological student at St Barnabas’ College, Belair, South Australia where she found the monastic environment of the college, at that time, very conducive to learning and spiritual growth.

She was the first Anglican woman to receive a Bachelor of Theology degree from Flinders University, Adelaide.

She was teaching Chemistry and Music at Emmanual College in 1979 when she realised there was more to her faith than an involvement in student prayer and support groups.

Eight years later in 1987 she was ordained as Deacon and went to St Judes in Brighton.

In January 1993 she was ordained as a Priest and this was the first ordination of women in the Anglican Church in Australia after the way was officially cleared by the General Synod in November 1992.

She is presently Chaplain at the Women's and Children's Hospital, North Adelaide.
