Murray was the second of two children born to Gladys and Bill Wilcourt, born in 1923. It is not known where he spent his childhood, but records indicate that on 30 September 1941, aged eighteen, he enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy (R.A.N.) as PA 2262 Ordinary Seaman and was stationed on H.M.A.S. Cerberos at Port Adelaide. However, three months later, on 24 December, he was discharged from the Navy - no explanation given. On 19 August 1942 he enlisted at Adelaide in the Australian Military Force as 42112, shortly afterwards joining the A.I.F. as SX 32220 in the 66 Australian Infantry Battalion, from which he was discharged on 7 October 1947.

Whether Murray worked for his father, Bill, in the hotel business, is not known, but in 2003, Murray was located in a southern district nursing home, but was unable to respond to an interview.
