Qualifications/EducationBirthJoseph was baptised in the Parish Church of St Giles on the 20 May 1832. His actual date of birth is not recorded. He was the son of Joseph Barlow, a Wagoner & Elizabeth Barlow of Newcastle. 1841 Census7 May St, Newcastle-under-Lyme
This shows Elizabeth Barlow with her son Joseph Barlow in the same household. Her occupation is shown as 'Ind' which means 'Independent'. The assumption is that her husband Joseph is deceased but this has not been proven. Her other children, Catherine, Elizabeth and William are inexplicably absent. 1851 Census7 May St, Newcastle-under-Lyme
This shows Elizabeth Barlow and son Joseph Barlow still living in the same household. It also shows William Barlow, the son who did not appear in the 1841 census. There is also a grandson John Barlow Turner, the son of John Turner and her daughter Catherine. MarriageJoseph married Sarah Ash on 26th June 1859 in the Parish of Audley. On the Marriage Certificate Joseph was shown as aged 27 and Sarah as aged 19 and they both listed their residence as the township of Talk-on-the-Hill. Talk-on-the-Hill or as it was more commonly known "Talk-o'-th'-Hill" was five miles north west of Newcastle-under-Lyme. In 1851 it was described as a large village and the head of a township and chapelry. The 1831 census gave a population of 1,611. There were several extensive coal mines in the Parish which provided most of the employment. It is assumed that the couple were married in the Parish Church of St James at Audley. In 1851 this was described as a fine Gothic structure which was restored and re-built in 1846. It is noteworthy that the vicar who officiated at the marriage of Joseph and Sarah, the Reverend C P Wilbraham, BA was also recorded as the vicar in 1851. Following are the marriage certificate details. 1859 Marriage solemnized at Parish Church in the Parish of Audley in the County of Stafford

From the marriage certificate it is known that Joseph was born in 1832 and his father's name was also Joseph and had the profession of "Carrier". This enabled the identifacation of Joseph Barlow Christened 20 May 1832 at Newcastle Under Lyme, Stafford 20 May 1832, the son of Joseph & Elizabeth Barlow of Newcastle, Waggoner. Ann Worthington is Sarah's married sister. 1861 CensusMount Pleasant
Joseph and his wife are about to start their family. 1871 CensusLeek Road, Smallthorne
The first son, Lewis, was born in Newcastle-under-Lyme in 1861. Lewis died at the age of 26. The first daughter Amy Ash was born in John Street Biddulph which is to the north east of Newcastle-under-Lyme in 1864. In 1868 the second son, Ernest Joseph, was also born at Biddulph. Ernest married Amelia Smith in 1891. On both of the above birth certificates Joseph recorded his occupation as a clerk at an iron works. In 1870 the third son Arthur William was born at Smallthorne which is closer to Newcastle-under-Lyme. This birth certificate records Joseph's occupation as a Cashier and Coal Agent. In 1872 the second daughter Lillian who missed the 1871 census was born, also at Smallthorne. When Arthur was married on 24th Sep 1891 the marriage certificate records Joseph's occupation as a retired Coal Merchant but this does not necessarily mean that Joseph was still alive. A family member believes that there is another younger daughter called Alice. Alice has not been traced in records. None of the family can be found in the 1881 census. In the 1891 census Sarah is shown as the head of the household. It is concluded that Joseph died some time between 1872 and 1891 but a death certificate to verify this has not been located.
